Young Shin Kim

Clay chose me as much as I chose it—it is a medium that embodies life’s cycles of renewal and resilience. Its malleable, transformative nature mirrors my own journey of rediscovery as an immigrant navigating the intersection of two cultures. Working with clay feels like a dialogue with history, where each piece holds the weight of tradition while remaining open to endless possibilities. Its warmth and tactile essence allow me to shape not just forms but emotions, creating vessels that hold stories of identity, connection, and renewal.

I am drawn to the Buncheong style for its spontaneity, earthy textures, and unpretentious beauty. This 15th-century Korean technique resonates deeply with me, as it reflects both the freedom of expression I encountered in American ceramics and the elegance of Korean traditions. Through my work, I aim to bridge the past and present, creating pieces that serve as both cultural artifacts and contemporary reflections. I envision my art as a medium of dialogue, one that speaks to modern society’s search for authenticity and interconnectedness, encouraging viewers to see beauty in simplicity and meaning in shared human experiences.

NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts)

                            About Ceramicist Young Shin Kim

                            Artist Bio

Young Shin Kim is an accomplished contemporary ceramist whose work bridges the rich traditions of Korean ceramic art and the innovative spirit of modern American ceramics. Based in Orange County, California, she holds an M.F.A. in Ceramics from California State University Fullerton, an M.A. in Korean Art History from Hongik University in Korea, and a B.A. in English Literature from Ewha Womans University, Korea.

Kim’s artistry is deeply influenced by her bicultural experiences, blending the elegance, harmony, and simplicity of traditional Korean ceramics with the dynamic creativity of the West. Her mastery of the Korean Buncheong technique allows her to reinterpret ancient forms with a contemporary voice. Her work has been featured in international juried exhibitions and is part of permanent collections, including the American Museum of Ceramic Art, CA.

As an artist and educator, Kim has passionately engaged with her community for nearly two decades. She has served as an artist-in-residence at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, CA, since 2006, teaching ceramics and curating cross-cultural exhibitions that foster artistic exchanges between the U.S. and Korea. Most recently, she has expanded her artistic repertoire by incorporating mixed media into her work, continuing her exploration of cultural and artistic synthesis.
